Guerrilla Data Lab: 60 minutes at BRIC for NYC Open Data Week

This is the shortest thing we do and maybe the most fun. Twenty minutes: a crash course on hijacking public data for public art. Forty minutes: markers, big paper, and a room of strangers drawing the base of a chart and asking the rest of the room to fill it in with stickers. Ten minutes to post everything on the wall, ten to vote, and a debrief that always runs over.

We tested it on 25 people at BRIC in Brooklyn as part of Open Data Week, with Data Through Design, and it’s been the seed of every workshop since — Utrecht, Budapest, NOAHCON, LA. Everyone leaves with a chart they made and a slightly different idea of what data is for.
